How local conversion works

Your images are converted by this page, on your device, with the same code as the Imgkeep extension. Nothing is uploaded. The site counts page views, and which formats were converted with how many files (for example "webp → jpg, 3 files"); it never sends image contents, file names or file sizes.

  • Load this page, then turn off your Wi-Fi: converting still works, for every format except AVIF, whose encoder loads the first time you choose it.
  • Open your browser's developer tools, choose the Network tab and convert a file: no request carries your image.
  • The code is public: site/convert on GitHub, with a test that checks converting makes no network request and works offline.

Quick format guides

WebP to JPG

Need a JPG for an upload form or a photo workflow? Choose JPG, add your WebP image and download the result. Transparent areas get a background colour; pick PNG when you need to keep transparency.

AVIF to JPG

Have an AVIF image another app won't open? Convert it to JPG in your browser and download the result. For transparent artwork, pick PNG so the background can stay transparent.

PNG to JPG

Photos saved as PNG are often far bigger than they need to be. Convert them to JPG for smaller files, with the quality and the colour for transparent areas you choose.

Short answer

Drop your WebP files above, keep PNG selected, then download them, or copy one as a PNG to paste straight into a design. PNG keeps every pixel and any transparent background: right for logos, stickers and screenshots. Files are bigger than JPG. Nothing is uploaded and there's no sign-up. Animated WebP becomes one frame; choose GIF to keep it moving.

Updated

Why is the PNG bigger than the WebP?

PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly, while WebP usually compresses with small, invisible losses. The converter shows the real size before and after. To make the PNG smaller, set a maximum width, or choose JPG if there's no transparency to keep.

When is JPG better?

For photos without transparency: JPG files are much smaller and every app opens them. Use WebP to JPG.

Is the transparency really kept?

Yes. PNG keeps transparent and partly transparent areas exactly. The preview shows them over a checkerboard, so you can see what's see-through before you download.

How do I keep an animation?

PNG holds one picture, so an animated WebP becomes its first frame. Pick GIF in the menu above to keep the motion (in Chrome and Edge; GIFs are at most 800 px wide and 600 frames), or see how to save an animated WebP as a GIF.

Can I paste it into Canva, Figma or Google Slides?

Yes: use Copy as PNG on the result and paste it. Google Slides and Docs don't list WebP among the formats they take, and PNG works everywhere. More in getting an image into Canva, Figma or Google Slides.

Questions

Does WebP to PNG lose quality?

No. PNG is lossless, so the PNG shows exactly what the WebP showed.

Why won't Google Slides take my WebP?

Google's help lists PNG, JPG and GIF for images, not WebP. Convert to PNG, or copy the result as PNG and paste it.

Can I make the PNG smaller?

Yes: set a maximum width before converting, or convert to JPG if the image has no transparency.

Save images straight from the web.

Use Imgkeep for Chrome or Edge to choose a format when you right-click an image: no file to convert afterwards.
